If you are planning to visit the UK, you may now need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new requirement is being introduced by the UK government as part of its border modernisation plans.
An ETA is a quick online permission to travel, linked to your passport. It is required before you board a flight or other transport to the UK. The application process is simple, completed online or via an app, and decisions are usually made within three working days.
Who needs an ETA?
Travellers who do not need a visa to visit the UK will now need to obtain an ETA.
It applies to visitors coming for tourism, business, study (up to six months) or transit.
UK and Irish passport holders are exempt.
An ETA will cost £16 and will be valid for multiple trips over a two year period, or until your passport expires if sooner.
What this means for business travellers
For frequent travellers to the UK, the ETA should make entry smoother as it helps speed up border processes. However, it is important to apply in advance of travel to avoid disruption.
